Chapter 11

Just as he promised, Luke came back 20 minutes later. We made some awkward small talk until the oven timer finally went off.

I will say, the bread looked and smelled beautiful. Luke managed to pull both loaves out of the oven without burning himself which was quite the feat in his eyes.

We loosely wrapped up his loaf and sent him home with it. I promised to tell Jessica about his excellent baking skills.

Now I was in a bad situation because I was going to have to tell Jessica everything that happened. It wasn't going to be pretty. From everything I saw, there was something wrong between Luke and Jessica. And whether she was aware of it or not, he definitely was. The man literally chose to run away instead of talking to me about it.

I considered what my options were.

I could give her very limited details of what he said. Basically that he said everything was fine and there were no problems. Leaving out all the weirdness.

Or I could be honest and give her the full details.

I knew what I was going to do--I was going to tell her everything. Hopefully, I could convince her to have a talk with him.

I actually didn't have tons of time to brood over the subject the next day. It was a big day at work for me. I was going to make some test versions of my apple and pumpkin pies for Ann to analyze.

The crusts and fillings were all premade, I just needed to assemble and bake them this afternoon after the store closed. Ann said she had some bookkeeping work to do so she didn't mind staying late.

First I had to get through the normal day's work though.

Carly and I were packing rosemary bread for the sandwich shop we were partnered with. She was being quite pleasant surprisingly.

“So how much longer until graduation?” I asked, tightening the cellophane over the bread in my hands.

“Eh, I’ve got a solid two years left, maybe three. I just changed my major to English which puts me back another six months.” Carly stacked two more loaves into the delivery box.

“Oh yeah? What do you want to do with that? Write?” I truly wasn’t sure what one did with an english degree. However, considering I was doing nothing with my communications degree, I wasn’t one to talk.

“I think I want to teach. Hopefully high school english if everything goes as planned.”

“That’s cool. I think you’ll be perfect for that.”

And I really did. English teachers always seemed to have that moody, dark attitude. Maybe it was what made them such deep thinkers when it came to literature. At any rate, I thought it would work well with Carly.

We finished packing away the rest of the bread and soon everything was doe but clean up.

By noon I was able to start working on my pies. Carly already had plans that afternoon so she said to save her a piece for tomorrow. That was fine with me, Ann's opinion was the only one I really cared about.
